The conflict in Syria began with protests against President Bashar al-Assad’s regime in March 2011. A year and a half later, the violence had escalated and the International Red Cross declared the conflict a civil war.

The death toll continues to climb and is estimated to exceed 100,000. Syrians have fled their homes in search of safety elsewhere in the country and in neighbouring countries such as Turkey, Iraq, Jordan, and Lebanon.

More than 2 million have registered with the UN High Commissioner on Refugees. As the number of displaced Syrians climbs, refugee camps are becoming overrun and conditions dire.  ¾ of refugees are women and children.
